The legend
The tribe that never knelt
Rome arrives
Julius Caesar marches into the lands of the Belgae, between the Ardennes forest and the Meuse. One by one, the tribes are forced into submission.
Atuatuca
Ambiorix, king of the Eburones, lures a full Roman legion and five cohorts out of their winter camp. In a forest valley near modern Tongeren, they are wiped out. It is one of the worst defeats of Caesar's whole Gallic campaign.
Caesar's revenge
Caesar swears to erase the Eburones and burns their lands. He hunts Ambiorix across the Ardennes for months.
Never caught
Ambiorix vanishes into the forest with a handful of riders. Rome never finds him. Today his statue stands in the market square of Tongeren, the oldest town in Belgium.
